Under the Sea July 21, 2010

di·o·ram·a  n. A three-dimensional miniature or life-size scene in which figures, stuffed wildlife, or other objects are arranged in a naturalistic setting against a painted background.

In Mrs. Slade’s class we made dioramas about the ocean and sea creatures. The dioramas were made from boxes we brought from home e.g. shoe boxes, kleenix boxes. To make our diorama’s we had to conduct research about the sea creatures and plants we wanted to put in it. We then used paper and other recycled materials, like crumpled up newspaper or egg cartons to create our dioramas. Below are some of our finished products.

Cooking with Mrs. Slade – Banana Muffins July 20, 2010

We have been cooking every other week since the beginning of the school year with Mrs. Slade. Recently, however, we got to cook without Mrs. Slade’s help! We were given a recipe and had to follow it all by ourselves – Banana Muffins. We did make them earlier this year, so it wasn’t too hard. Some of the ingredients included banana, milk, eggs, self raising flour, sugar, and butter. Everyone liked the banana muffins and many reckoned they tasted better because we made them by ourselves (although a few were a little gooey because they were not quite cooked through).

Student Contributors: Coby and ConnorH

Grade ¾ S and Grade ¾ H are going to be debating each other! In order to prepare for these debates each class has been divided into seven groups and assigned a topic. Some of the topics include:

Each group has been conducting research to learn more about their assigned topic and is creating cue cards on one of the subtopics or the introduction on different coloured paper. Some of the groups will also be making posters about their topic.

Once we are finished with our preparation we will be debating each other. One side will be the affirmative on a topic and the other side the negative. We will even have judges, so stay tuned for more!

River Board Game June 2, 2010

Posted by studentblogger in : How we are helping the environment, What we are learning in the classroom , add a comment

Student Contributors: ConnorH

Last week Grade ¾ H worked in pairs to make “river” board games. Through the game we were trying to learn what kind of activities pollute the river (e.g. a cow walking into a river and all the dirt washing off the cow, people putting trash like plastic bags in the river, over fishing) and what kind of activities help keep the river clean (e.g. people picking up trash, leaving reeds which help filter/eat the dirt).

To make the game started with two sheets of paper which we stuck together with sticky tape. After that we drew a big long line and another long line next to it. This was the river. Then we drew little lines to join the big lines together to create game board spaces. In some of the game board spaces we put a “P” for pollution, in others a “C” for clean. We then drew cartoons/pictures next to the C’s and P’s e.g. people planting things or dirt coming off from washing your car and decorated our game board. Finally we created quiz cards.

The longest “river” game was Jasper’s and ConnorH’s – it was 250 spaces long! Luca’s was the most decorative.

At Friday assembly we shared our river board games with the entire school as an example of our learning. Several of us shared how we made them and how you play them.

A week ago Friday we went on an excursion as part of our membership in Waterwatch. Waterwatch is a national community water quality monitoring network that encourages all Australians to become active in the protection of their waterways. We are a member in the Corrangamite water catchment and our sampling site is on the Barwon River upstream from the Buckley’s Falls weir. To get there we took a bus to Fyansford. From there we walked to a picnic place near Buckley’s Falls where we had our play lunch. We then walked a little further to take the water samples. We will be testing the water samples for pH, Phosphate, Salinity and Turbidity. We also looked for waterlife in the water samples. In order to do this we put the water into an ice cube tray and used a magnifying glass. We saw several kinds of “bugs” and had to figure out what they were; turns out we saw fresh water shrimp, diving beetles, tad poles.

After taking the water samples we walked up some more rocks that were sort of in the shape of some stairs. We then found the real stairs – there were 104 stairs on the first set and 202 on second set!

While we were walking we saw a dead animal, some people thought it was a koala, but others thought it was a rabbit. At another point some people thought we saw a dead platypus floating in the water, but Mr. Holloway said it was a log. Everyone agrees though, that we saw a live wallaby!

We finished the excursion with a play and sausage BBQ lunch at Queen’s Park. Games played included dodgeball, markers up and soccer.  Some people got to have seconds on their sausages. When it was time to go, we caught a bus back to school.

Special thanks to our parent volunteers who participated in the excursion – we love it when parent can come with us, so please think about attending a future excursion!

Below is is a slideshow from our excursion – make sure to turn up the volume to hear the music.

Cooking with Mrs. Slade: Cheese and Vegemite Scrolls May 27, 2010

Student Contributors: BenF and William

Alternate weeks Grade ¾ H and Grade ¾ S cook with Mrs. Slade. Our most recent cooking adventure was making cheese and Vegemite scrolls. The basic ingredients were the new Vegemite cheeseybite, grated tasty cheese and puff pastry. To make the scrolls first we laid out the pastry and spread the Vegemite cheeseybite evenly over the pastry. Next we sprinkled the cheese over the top. Then we rolled it up and cut it into ten pieces. Then we were ready to put them in the oven, where we put them until they were golden brown. Everyone seemed to love them – there were none left!

Fruit and Vege Week Activities May 26, 2010

Student Contributors: Dhanyl and BenF

Grade ¾ S and Grade ¾ H did a number of activities as part of Fruit and Veg Week. Grade ¾ S got to try a number of exotic fruits and vegetables. Some of the fruits and vegetables we tasted included: coconut flake and milk, feijoa, ruby grapefruit, pomegranate, kiwi, persimmon, honeydew, baby corn, bean shoots, pea pod, broccolini, avocado, radicchio, lime, dates and fennel. The most exotic thing we tasted was a feijoa – not very many people had even heard of this fruit! As we were tasting, we kept track of whether what we had tasted was a fruit or vegetable, and whether we thought it tasted sweet, sour, bitter, savoury or other. No one liked everything, but a lot of people seemed to like the ruby grapefruit and surprisingly (since only a few had heard of it) the feijoa.

Both ¾ S and ¾ H conducted a science experiment with Mrs. Slade to test our ability to taste using fruits and vegetables. We had fruits and vegetables like raw potato, pear and onion fed to us while we were blindfolded and held our nose (so we couldn’t use our sense of smell to tell us what we were tasting). Then we had to guess what we had tasted. Other fruits and vegetables we could be given included radish, feijoa, and apple. Some people liked the experiment, but some of us didn’t. Either way, we had a great time with Mrs. Slade!

We are proud to say that Mr. Holloway, our teacher, was selected as both the state and national winner for this award recently. Sponsored by Sanyo, the Green Teacher Award seeks to reward environmentally conscious teachers across Australia. Mr. Holloway was nominated for his ‘Ashby re-use a shoe’ project last year. The project aimed to educate students about the challenges that landfill poses to our environment, the importance of reduce/reuse/recycle and the small ways individuals can make a difference. 100 shoes were collected; all parts of the shoes are used to create sporting surfaces in conjunction with the Nike Re-use a Shoe project.

As the state winner Mr. Hollway will receive a three-day trip to Japan to view the world’s largest solar structure: Sanyo’s Solar Ark and the school will receive a Sanyo Eneloop family pack containing a selection of rechargeable batteries. As the national winner, in addition to the above prizes, the school will receive a Promethean 387 Pro Widescreen interactive whiteboard and PLC-WXL46 projector with GLWLXL45 bracket for their school.
